About Steve

Husband, father of three and a happy Singaporean.

My Passion

Throughout my life I have supported environmental awareness

It gives me great pleasure to see the whole world finally waking up to the challenges facing our planet. Although I'm no Greta Thunburg I have been quietly trying to influence

It is with relief I watch these communities finally realising our long term destruction of the planet cannot continue. I am personally devastated by the fact that we have exterminated 69% of the wild animals of this planet since the 1970’s that’s only 50 years.

The legacy we leave for future generations is one of death and destruction beyond anything previously conceived of. I fear history will not look kindly on our generation. We will perhaps be known as the despised generation. We are the first generation to have science based evidence to confirm we are destroying the planet. Whilst we now understand the damage we are collectively doing to the world we still continue with the destruction, with little or no change to our behaviors.

My Neighborhood

I am lucky to live in Singapore with my family and I have recently been fortunate to be accepted as a Singaporean so I plan to stay here for the long term. I enjoy walking in the North East of the island and elsewhere as I travel and try to record my experiences of the local environment in different ways.

Peace and Nature

As I walk around the National Parks in my locality I often take videos of the local wildlife, both flora and fauna. I’ve always loved being near the sea and many of my videos try to capture the sounds and sights of the coastline and beaches. These are mainly included in my TikTok feed
As well as videos I try and capture photos of the wildlife I find along the way, both flora and fauna. I use a really helpful app that helps me to capture, share and learn about the things I see along the way called

My Reality

Living alongside one of the world’s busiest maritime shipping lanes means that although there is a huge range of wonderful places to visit and things to see, those places I value most are also at risk from the selfishness of man, both from those passing through on vessels who tend to use the ocean as their rubbish bin, to those living along the coast in the region who tend to do the same thing. Much of this rubbish ends up on the coast where I walk and I have spent several years documenting what I find in my Instagram account

ZeroWaste SG

When I got the opportunity to join the board of ZeroWaste Singapore http://www.zerowastesg.com/ I was delighted to volunteer. It already aligns with so many of my interests and I feel I am really making a difference not only in helping to influence the behaviour of companies and organisations in Singapore but also helping in the education of coming generations of Singaporeans to understand the challenges and opportunities in living a more sustainable life

My Carbon Footprint

I have been a BMW man now for 20 years. When I say BMW that means no car of my own for 20 years, I get around using B (bus), M (MRT) and W (Walking). I still use cars when needed for business and pleasure but I use taxi, or ridesharing services like Grab, Uber and Gojek. Occasionally we hire a car for family events and but thats fairly infrequently. I also tried to change the way I travel internationally. As an expat for most of my life I have spent a hige amount of time, money – and carbon – on the road or in the air. Over the last few years I have made a conscious effort to try and work in roles where I remote connect for overseas assignments wherever possible. This is not easy, but I continue the fight to reduce my flights. I have begun to offset my carbon footprint too. Though I still have work to do to be confident I’m doing enough, I offset my flights when I can and each month using the DBS scheme I offset the carbon load that accrued through my credit card and other transactions.

My Life Changes

In addition to thinking about the carbon load in my business I give some thought to how this impacts my day to day life. For both health and environmental reasons I have switched to a mostly pescatarian diet. Fish as a protein has a far lower carbon load than most meat. I also eat a lot of vegetables and prefer a low carb diet where this is practical. Of course, I still cheat on these promises on a regular basis, but don’t beat myself up too hard when I fail. I also try and reduce our own family plastic waste but thats pretty difficult in Singapore at the moment. I hope my efforts with ZWSG will make this easier in the future.

My Community

Living in a hub

When we moved back to Singapore as a family in 2012 I was keen that we could make the most of public transport and facilities and continue my BMW no car lifestyle. We were lucky enough to find a unit located very close to MRT, LRT, Bus station, hospital, community centre and the local shopping centre. It’s been a great move for us as a family, and provides a lot of flexibility both to me and other family members who can easily move around Singapore as a result of this one choice.

COP

As part of my need to give back to the community I signed up for and completed the Singapore Police Force “Citizens on Patrol” or COP course. It was great to get a refresher on my life saving and firefighting skills directly from the SCDF as well as the briefings and updates from the Neighbourhood Police Centre. As I spend so much of my time walking by the coast in the North of the island I have also been delighted to establish an informal relationship with the Police Coast Guard in that area too.

MCST

As part of my commitments locally I also joined the council of my MCST. It’s a lot of work and of course no financial reward, but it felt like the right thing to do to support my immediate neighbours and the community.
